Explaining the web of life

"Seasons" is about to begin.

I felt a smooth cool rock on my cheek....

The EarthKeepers program at Wild Mountains was the kick start to our grade 5,6,7 term unit on Ecological Footprints. The aim of attending Wild Mountains was to provide students with a foundation of ecological awareness to draw on throughout the term.

I noticed a transformation in the students the moment we loaded the four wheel drives and started our climb up the mountain with Richard, Justin and Scott. The mystical atmosphere surrounding the mountain had the children in awe from that very first moment.

Once the program began, the kids were completely on-board. The inquisitive nature of EarthKeepers creates a sense of wonder among students, which keeps them on the edge of their seats throughout the three days of camp as they uncover the many secrets of EM and learn about their role on the Earth.

For a class made up of almost entirely kinesthetic learners, the immersion in the forest environment was ideal. Coupled with magical story-telling skills, students soaked up information like sponges. What better way to teach them about the flow of energy through food chains than to place them directly into the environment where they can explore the details first hand?!!

Each child took home an individual highlight from camp. When we returned to the classroom on Monday morning, I was badgered with requests to return to camp. They even talked me into hiring a bus once a fortnight so that we can go to our nearby state forest to continue magic spots and continue the exploration of our natural environment.

Well definitely be back! It is a life-changing program that helps to create perspective about the truly important aspects of life and helps students find their place within the Earth.

Thanks so much, Richard and Justin and all of the family, staff and volunteers who helped to make our time at Wild Mountains outstanding!

Kind regards,
Tracey
